Well, MarketEl mentioned something about it being so close to Society Hill Towers and the kind of reaction it will get.

I'm okay with this project... just lamenting the loss of movie screens for a while. I'm enough of a film buff that I have gone to NYC just to see movies

The article said the move would be to the building attached to current Ritz on Walnut.

The building is actually not attached to the Ritz structure but next door to it - it's a Federal Revival structure called the Nelson Building.

Presumably, if I understand all this correctly, the new tower will rise on the site of the current movie theater and the Nelson Building, expanded to accommodate the movie screens and (maybe?) with an addition on top of it, would be attached to the tower.

I feel I kinda thread the needle between you and cpomp on these sort of matters. I tend to support projects that lend density where it is called for (e.g., the Boyd, which has been sitting vacant for years blighting the neighborhood), and spots which are functioning perfectly fine (e.g., this one and Jewelers Row). I'm wary when any developer tries to sweeten the pot with promises of leaving functioning businesses without charge. So yea, I really don't see the Ritz 5 packing up its film projector and popcorn popper and moving in next door.

On a different matter, I'm glad cpomp still feels like one of us.

Totally torn on this one...

Clearly, the space is screaming for a project like this. But those theatres are critical to maintain. It's a gift to be able to have a venue like that in this town.

I'd be heartbroken if that went away.

Since all of the Ritzes are managed by Landmark, who knows how they will view it.

Sometimes Curbed jumps the gun, but here are some updates on 2 potentially huge projects.

I think the Rittenhouse tower will get built sooner than later. There building in west Philadelphia is pretty much leased out and up for sale (to raise money for the new tower I assume). Good work from them so far.

After historic paper mill shuts down, maybe a new life for Manayunk's Venice Island

What does everyone think should happen with Venice Island in Manayunk?

I wish the city could lure a big corporation from another city to the proposed office tower on Market to get the project going.

Hmm, I would love for a mixed use development, condos/apts with retail and entertainment. Almost like a town center on a little island. However, flooding may limit the possibilities. I just hope it doesn't end up as townhouses.

For all the talk of "luring" companies from other cities, it's actually pretty rare to get a large, significant company to move to a completely different area, and it's even rarer that it occurs without some form of corporate welfare. There was a lot of buzz for example when GE moved their HQ from Connecticut to Boston. But even as attractive and dynamic a city as Boston utilized tax break incentives to seal the deal: http://www.wbur.org/news/2016/04/07/...tax-incentives

Of course, real estate companies will do what they can to find new tenants, and that's fine as a private sector endeavor, but in terms of public efforts, it's FAR more cost-efficient and effective for local governments to assist existing companies and foster and retain new startup companies. And recent efforts by government, tech, medical and academic institutions in Philly seem to be really focusing on doing just that.

It's not as flashy and exciting of an approach to economic development, but the strongest economies grow diversely and organically over time.
