Does anyone know if the streets in West Philly from Baltimore to Spruce are intentionally in alphabetical order? The ordering is: Baltimore, Cedar, Hazel, Larchwood, Osage, Pine, Spruce. I guess it could just be a coincidence, but I'm wondering if anyone knows for certain.

I don't know the answer to your question. But since we're doing fun West Philly street facts...

Did you know that you can take Baltimore Ave all the way to Baltimore, MD? Along the way it changes names (to Baltimore Pike and then route 1), but stay straight on Baltimore Ave out of West Philly and you'll end up in Baltimore!

I was told when I was a kid that the "tree" names in Center City ran from hardest to softest woods. Chestnut, Walnut, Locust, Spruce, Pine. I never took the time to verify, but there you go....

PhillyViaBoston -- very interesting! I may have to do a road trip to Baltimore via Baltimore Ave. sometime.

G Goo -- fascinating; I don't know any wood experts but I will try to verify. Thanks for your response!

Less interesting, but Lancaster Avenue also goes to Lancaster.

In fact in Colonial times, Philly's Baltimore Avenue was the original Baltimore Pike that linked Charm City with The City of Brotherly Love.

Ironically, Washington Avenue (in South Philly) does not go to Washington. But I think that's because it's named after the person, not the city.
