We all know what happens when we lose credit cards. I am wondering if motels etc. require the plastic card or can a person get by just knowing the card numbers?
POS purchases require physical presence of the credit card. There's no real risk with carrying it around as long as it is Visa, MasterCard, AMEX or Discover.
I've done it before when dealing with someplace without a card reader.
No special advantage except didn't need to dig the card out from my wallet.
Can't say whether or not places would require it but it's certainly not required when you use one online or by phone.
Most places require an imprint. If you're dealing with a merchant that accepts credit card orders by phone I suppose you might talke them into taking your number verbally, but they'll want the 3-digit number on the back as well. They'll also want the expiration date.

This would certainly set off my fraudar and I would refuse to rent the room to you.
Hotels, as well as all brick-and-mortar retailers, want the physical card.
