Due to the number of stray, injured, and family dogs that have been shot and killed by Erie police officers this year. I am urging City Council to put this issue on their agendas.
They need to strongly consider employing more animal control officers who will work alongside area rescue groups. One animal control officer working from 8 AM. to 4:30 PM. cannot possibly handle all of the calls a city the size of Erie requires.
I also ask that they enlist a tranqualizing agent as soon as possible so stray dogs will have a chance at getting a temperment evaluation in a calm setting, by a trained, educated professional.
A reduced-fee spay/neutering program funded by local and county governments would be a preventative measure to encourage responsible, yet economically distressed residents to take action against the worldwide over population issue. With this, a feral cat spay/neuter release program should also be a priority.
Specific breed legistration is not the answer. Erie police need to spend more time finding and stopping the abusive owners who are exploiting certain dogs for profit, and severe penalties for these actions must be taken.
I have an active petition to City Council at this link below:

Care2 : The Petition Site : Erie County needs mo-
animal-control-officers-and-a-spaynueter-program-stop-shooting-dogs

Erie needs to start acting. Please sign my petiton telling City Council that you want to see these changes made.
You may also contact City Council President Rubye Jenkins-Husband at: rjenkinshusband@erie.pa.us to make more of an impact.

Let's hope in the near future our shelters aren't as full with animals, and our streets have far less homeless strays.

Thank you for your concern.

Great idea, but when the police force has been cut by 3/4, they sure won't hire other animal control officers.

Default Recycle

I agree with your efforts. It's always nice to see people fighting for the right things. Keep up the good work.

Kind of a random question, but is there some sort of city or county recycling program in Erie?

Default recycling in Erie

Yes there is a program for recycling, but it was recently found to be flawed.
Apparently, the garbage men were mixing the garbage all together as reported by a home owner who watched the pick up and complained.
They are supposed to be working on a new one.

Dogs are protected under national laws. Animals such as dogs must be killed humanely, which is not by shooting randomly--what happens if it doesn't kill them?!

Those police officers should be ashamed of themselves. That is animal cruelty in one of the worst forms, and they are supposed to arrest people that do that!

"Animals are just animals," lots of people say, but humans are animals too. I wish more people would think about it that way.

The police always fire more than one shot. Once was when a 72 year old lady was still holding her dog by the collar! The dog was a puppy, about 11 months old.
It jumped up on a boy passing by. Even the boy said he was just trying to play.
The dog was a companion for a handicapped boy and was very gentle.
A neighbor across the street saw the dog jump on the boy and called animal control. With no animal control to answer the call, the police came. The lady was returning her grandson's dog back in the house and the police demanded over and over for her to release it. She didn't, so they shot it. They simply left with the dog dead on the ground.
The police chief sticks up for his men. The owners of the dog were on the news, and wanted to press charges. But it all depends on who has the most power here in Erie.
Which are the police and politicians.
I do have a witness, and the owners coming with me to city council.

Thanks for writing.

I'm not trying to start anything, but this looks like a rant that has no business being posted on this forum. If you ask the police what happened, I'm sure their version would be far different than this. As usual, the truth is probably somewhere in between.

Default Erie, PA

i have an aunt that lives right there by there, off warsaw rd. there are very nice houses up around there, a very peaceful place to live. i visit there on the holidays and i havent noticed a smell ever. my aunt just built a bigger house next to their old house and sold the old house, so they must love that area there. that landfill is right near where our slots-only casino is located, if ur into that sort of thing. ur right near upper peach street, which has lots of restaurants, a mall and other shopping, splash lagoon n the sports park. its prime location to live in erie in my mind
