Once again, thanks so much to you Ohiogirl81 for scoping out the neighborhood for me, though I'm sorry to hear it's not nearly as vibrant as it once was.

My family is also relocating to Erie, with me having the advantage of having lots of time on the ground in Erie before the move. First, while you may be fine using public transit to get downtown, I would not suggest making decisions based on transit. Though Erie has a decent bus system for a city its size - this is the US and public transit may not meet your standards. The major advantage of Frontier over Glenwood is its size. You are far more likely to find friends for yourself, your kids and your husband living in Frontier all within a (very nice) walk. Glenwood Hills/Heights and Glenwood are each about a fourth the size of Frontier and feel more isolated. Advantages of Glenwood are easy commute to Behrend, Glenwood YMCA is new and nice, and great access to the shopping on Peach w/o being commercial/suburban. Frontier has far better access to Presque Isle, Bayfront Bikeway, Waldameer (a fun break from library) and many of the things that make Erie a fun place to be, esp summer. if you like xc skiing, being east has the advantage of being closer to Wilderness Lodge - an unsung treasure of Erie- and downhill ski areas.

Good points and I will add that Glenwood is definitely closer to the nicest, in my humble opinion, fitness centers in Erie, which include the Glenwood YMCA and LECOM. Nautilus Fitness near the Frontier area is not bad, but I like the Glenwood YMCA and LECOM better. When we were searching for houses it was mainly between Glenwood Hills and Frontier and the main thing we noticed was the difference in yard sizes and number of garage bays. It was definitely more common for houses to have two car garages in Glenwood as well as larger lots. Of course there are huge lots in Frontier on South Shore and some of the corner houses on the side streets as well as the houses in the Frontier Association, but overall we noticed many more one car garages and smaller lots in Frontier. We are happy with our choice of Frontier and I hope the area continues to revitalize.
