I agree with you.

I would not say neither are abusive.

I am curious though, do earrings, even small studs, pose a choking hazard for infants and toddlers? I wouldn't pierce simply for that reason.

I personally think it's tacky. Infants with earrings just screams low/no class. Why not just wait until the child is older? That said, I don't really view it as child abuse.

Foot binding was a Chinese custom not Japanese (and yes it's important to get these things straight).

Piercing ears of an infant is not child abuse in America unless you can prove it harms the child (and that would have to be on an individual basis since there is no law).

I hear what you are saying as with skin tattoos; a son or daughter must be 18 years old but piercing is not addressed.

Personally I if one of my kids wanted to do it, I would definitely limit it to the ears (and then just one per ear).

Don't hand me "cultural," because that is just plain wrong. The Japanese used to bind the feet of young girls, too; that was cultural but STILL WRONG! I think it is horrible to have an infant's ears pierced! Let her get older and decide if she wants her ears pierced.

I absolutely have nothing against pierced ears, my ears are pierced, but it was a decision that I made--and I was very, very young when I made that decision! Sheesh, for crying out loud already..... IMHO the practice IS child abuse and should be regarded as such! What's next....tatoos????

Give me a break, child abuse?? It hardly qualifies, not even close. A shot at the doctor's office is more painful

I have seen some pretty well-to-do families who have their infant daughter's ears pierced.

Circumcision, tattoos, and foot binding all are permanent. Pierced ears are not. They will grow over if the child doesn't want her ears pierced when she gets older.

Personally, I don't think tiny babies need their ears pierced, but it isn't because I think it's cruel or abusive.

I don't think its abusive.

I also don't care for it, but on a personal level - for instance, if my husband had taken my daughter out when she was a baby and got her ears pierced I would have been very unhappy with him. It just gives me an "ick" feeling when I see infants with pierced ears. I don't freak out over it and think the parents are abusive. I have friends who pierced their infant daughter's ears and, while it is something I would not do, I don't think poorly of them for doing so.

I don't know if I would consider it abusive, but I personally wouldn't do it because I don't think little girls need to have that done until they want to. I do have some issues surrounding altering babies' bodies (without their consent of course) and that applies to circumcision, too. But I wouldn't hold that against anyone. Hopefully they know the real pros and cons of the procedures they do to their children. For our family, ear piercing is like a rite of passage - a day out to lunch and shopping. It is fun! I wouldn't have it any other way.

Out of all the horrific things being done to children and infants, why does this make you so angry? Molestation, physical and emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment... the list goes on. Find something more important to be up in arms about.

Getting a baby boy circumsised should be against the law if piercing a baby's ears is.

Most people have their kid's hair cut at some point. It grows back. Pierced ears will grow over if left. What's the difference?
