I don't think the inch after getting your period is even remotely close to accurate. I have heard that girls will grow, ON AVERAGE, for 3 more years after getting their period. If most kids grow on average 2"/year, that is 6". I know I grew 4" between 9th and 10th grade, having got my period at age 12 1/2 (just before 7th grade). One girl in DD's class got her period at age 10, was about 5' at the time and is now 6' tall. DD14 got her's last fall and has grown at least 2" since then and is still growing.
glad to hear all of these stories- I guess it is different for everyone- Hope she grows alot- My daughter had done most of her growing by 13 so that's why i just thought the doctor meant it(growing and inch after starting period) was for everyone.
I got mine at 10 and didn't really grow after it- but my mom is fairly short (she's 5'3 and I'm 5'4). I was on the tall side when I stopped growing so at least I had a brief bit of glory!
My daughter started when she was 13- average these days and was told she shouldn't grow more than an inch or incha and a half which we were thankful b/c she was so tall already. My niece just started and she is almost 11 and short- does this mean she won't grown more than an inch also- we are hoping not so- she need some height!!
I started at 11 and grew up steadily until 17, so no worries.
It's probably all the hormones in the food today.
I started around 10 or 11. I can't believe I used to wish for it.
I'm 5'2 by the way. I haven't grown in years.
I got my Grandma's short genes ( she was maybe 5 foot) I am 5'3
I started my slightly cycle before my 10th birthday. Didn't know it at the time. Mom was shocked! by the time they did the "class" for just girls I already knew all about it.
well I must be a freak then LOL cause I started at 11 and I am 5'10 and 127 lbs so tell me what one has to do with the other . I guess that there are always exceptions to the rule . Guess I am the exception .
I do not buy into the heigth and starting menstrual cycle early connection. 11, by the way, is not very early. It is actually fairly common for girls these days to start their cycles between 10 and 14. My husbands side of the family started much earlier. They were between 7-10 on average going through at least three generations, his sister was nine, his neice was 8 when they started puberty and our daughter, although she hasn't started her cycle yet, has had other changes that indicate she has started puberty and I am sure she will start her cycle in the very near future and she is 7. All the women on his side are all taller than I am and taller than the national average and grew a lot after they started their cycles. I hope our daughter grows taller as well, though I am less than an inch shorter than average myself so I do not worry about her being short.
I am a heck of a lot less worried about how tall she will be than I am worried about having my little girl grow up so fast. I want to be able to lift her up underneath the armpits and hold her every once in awhile and the time I can do that is going away so fast. I'm not too worried about the conversations because we've already dealt with her advanced little mind throwing all the questions at us all ready. We're pretty much through that. The other day there was a commercial on about a father trying to talk to his daughter about sex and her voice was narrating saying it's ok, just tell her to wait. I looked at DD, who was laughing at the commercial and told her to wait to have sex.
She laughted and said, "Why do they want you to tell your kids to wait to have sex?
"Well how old do you think you should be before you have sex?"
"Ummm....? 16?"
"That's why!"
"How long should I wait?"
"Wait until you are 30."
"Mom..you had me before you were 30."
"EXACTLY!"
She just chuckled and then said she would wait until she was 20 and then get married before having sex. She is TOO young to be thinking about this already!
