I could never work second shift and do heavy amounts of course work. I don't have anything to prove to myself or others. I want to live my life and be content with what I have.
If you want to go to school and there is no one paying your tuition, books, food, rent, etc., you do what you have to do
My son sees my husband and I work our butts off and he found a job at a cool restaurant where he started at the very bottom. He is now a server. it is open from 11 AM to 2 AM so the hours are there, no problem. He is grateful for them.
He will graduate from community college in August 2009 and did plan to go to a state school. If he does, he needs to pay off his car and have enough money for the next 2 years. I have a feeling he is rethinking his decision on that and will stay local as we have great employment opps here and several wonderful universities. He then will have no debt coming off the 4 years.
He sees his buddies slowly but surely coming home from the state schools b/c they didn't apply themselves or they partied too much. He has a learning disability and has learned to compensate. I am so proud of him.
He goes to school 2 days a week (3 classes on those days) and takes 1 online. He actually finds this semester pretty good working it that way.
He just seems to have goals and he is a lot like his dad (I think) - very quiet but determined and all around nice guy, the kind of guy you just don't notice till you get to know them.
He has come so far and I am just so proud of him! (from a proud mom)
I like that idea! What about concert tickets? New stereo system or kicka** speakers for the car? Or maybe foot the bill for a night out for him and a group of his friends, movie tickets and a nice dinner perhaps? Mine is turning twenty this week also, they grow up so fast don't they!
He did the speakers last year - he works in a restaurant and it is a decent one so all the staff hang out a lot. I might make a cool CD for him with some good 60's songs and some from the 70's and 80's - I wish I had thought of that earlier - I have a DJ client. He loves the music we grew up with.
I should look into some future concerts - that's a good idea too - it's hard, though, b/c they all works nights - and Friday/Saturday are usually def working nights.
Well of course, I'm saying I won't do it just to prove that I'm a worthy human being. I don't need to jump through hoops of fire. All the classes I took in college were moderately to extremely challenging. The part time work I did throughout college was physically and mentally draining.

How about buying him a fun "experience" like a trial flight, hang-gliding etc... or driving around a racing circuit etc... A lot of companies provide all kinds of "experiences" ( white-water rafting , ballooning, quad biking, etc..) . Some of them can be done with friends which might be good fun too.
If it is too expensive, how about getting together with other members of the family to give your son an experience of a lifetime.
I have bought my fiance many of these over the last few years and he has loved every one.
Yeah the Escort is OK but I like the subtle differences on it's twin, the Tracer. But as a winter rat for a college kid they are pretty durable and fuel efficient.
since he has much of what he wants (not needs) why dont you donate to cancer research or WWF in his name?
if he is as great a son as you say, he will appreciate the gesture. it might even get him to donate on a regular.
