In sports they aren't falling from heights up to 15 feet off the ground. Most of their injuries are due to slipping or the direct contact with others, not falls to the ground.

In addition to the height of the set, the swings increase the speed at which the child would normally be going if they fall out. They will land much harder.

The reason for the materials is to give an added cushion factor for the falls to be absorbed by. Grass is growing from hard dirt and it simply doesn't allow much cushion at all.

The only broken bone any of my 4 kids has ever had was my son, who at 14 months of age, simply slid off the rocket rider onto the ground because he let go and lost his balance. He broke his collar bone in that fall.

In the 11 years I was in the child care center as management, we only had one injury from our climber equipment that required a hospitalization and that was only because a young boy decided to break all the rules and he climbed up on a top rail and jumped way over the cushioned safety zone to the hard ground and shattered his leg bones. Everyone else who fell or jumped and landed in the pea gravel only ended up with scraped skin or perhaps a bloody nose.

mal...it was 9 cubic yards or 13.5 tons for 418 incl tax & delivery...that sounds so much better than the 2200 that I was quoted for the rubber stuff!

How many of you grew up with the aluminum swing sets that would come off the ground when you swung too high? I don't think our parents paid thousands of dollars for those

Never knew the undertaking, research, and money that went into buying a swing set, though now they are called "play systems", in today's world

I do recall those aluminum ones that came off the ground. That reminds me that our neighbours had this fantastic wooden see saw that had so much give. As older children, we could really fling each other into the air. Once they noticed that, though, they took it down. I still miss it 30 years later.

I love that rubber pellet stuff at the playgrounds, but I bet there are chemicals in there that may not be so good. But, it's so nice to sit on. Mulch does get icky and you have to replace it. We'll probably go with the pea stone option ourselves. Still, part of me would like to put that rubber stuff all over my backyard.

Back in the fall of 2005, we paid $610 for the pea stone and landscaper's fabric. I don't recall, but it might have been 11 - 13 cubic yards.
