There's a reason Steve Jobs did not allow his kids to have computers; and these days, cell phones have the capacity and do serve as mini-computers.
These devices do enable us to do many things that weren't even on the radar a few years ago. On the flip side (no pun intended), they are addictive. Several studies have been done on this topic.
Like everything in life, it's about yin and yang.
Limit screen time. Get them outdoors, helping others, doing chores. Monitor and take away the phone if kids do not abide by the rules.
Just spoke with my daughter last night and she seemed receptive to having the phone out of the room. She says that she needs to be distracted and busy. I guess she is more self aware than I thought. Back in the day kids would go knock on doors to go play, but I guess that doesn't happen anymore during the boredom hours of their day.

There aren't any kids home after school anymore. The problem is her peers are in after school care while their moms work.
It was hard for my kids too. One day a week, we to the book store or library, another day we would go for a walk, another day we went to Friendly's, etc. Finally, on Fridays the only other kid on the block came for a playdate. It's horrible because kids don't learn independence, interpersonal relationship - friendship, etc. It's a bad thing all around.
I took the phones away at bedtime. I shut them down and lock them up in my bedroom.
The tantrums and sobbing over his injustice! It's cruel and inhumane! I ruined their lives!
Hey, that's my rules as I paid their cell phone bills. The kiddos dealt with it. Otherwise, they will be receiving texts 11 pm to 4 am. It's no way to live.
they dont listen to us they hide under pillow and then look at porn everyday looking at porn
It's 2023... kids born in this century only know of electronics and phones are a big part of their lives. The rest of us who grew up in previous generations just need to understand that. I do agree at younger ages that parents should control the content they can view on their phones and even place a "curfew" on when it's time to put the phone down but at the end we just need to also realize that this is the new reality. These phones were designed to do one thing and that was to put the entire world in the palm of our hands... as good and as negative as that is.
i agree some of them look at porn on phone it 2023 phone not the same
I agree with this approach. But what stops children from using their ipads, laptops, or Playstations till 4AM?
As a 31 year old adult, I totally understand the risks of excessive social media use on young people. But if I were 13 and had my phone confiscated at bedtime, I'd buy a cheap 2nd $30-50 and hide it somewhere.

..........
A non wireless house, perhaps? Where the link to the Net is by Ethernet cable and that cable is only available in one room that you control?
It may be the first step but, of course, kids are inventive. I had a high school, back in the dark ages, friend who had a secret land line in his bedroom.......that his Mom eventually found.
I realize that I'm the pesky fly that keeps buzzing around your head that you can't seem to get rid of, but your kids (and perhaps you yourself) are addicted to their smartphones and it's an addiction that isn't going away. Not by itself anyway. Can anyone see a future that will not result in the disintegration of society that I've painted?

Probably one where coming on line opens one up to being attacked so one has to practice time tables of radio silence......in a nutshell.
Plausible? It has been done often enough in the past in wars. Saw a video of a Marine in charge of a task force who went as far as having critical orders delivered by messengers in small boats (and other silent tactics)....and ran circles around the other force.
Applicable here? I suppose those who believe like Sarah O'Connor in the Terminator franchise may teach their children to think that way. But then again, if one found themselves in a Ukraine type situation, it would be a way of thinking to prevent one from being interned or killed.....just saying. That is, when the child says, "Mom, that will never happen!", one can say, "How can you say that when it is happening now in a civilized country?".
