Book for baby shower (babies, toddlers, boys, daughter)

A very old (time-wise) friend of mine has a daughter having a baby - I was sent an invite (which I'm sure was a courtesy as it's 300 mi. away) - I did go to the daughters' wedding (lovely affair). Anyway, invite says all they ask is a book and an inscription would be a nice addition, they don't care if it's new or used.
I don't have children - any thoughts on a book that would be good to get and mail, something that hopefully they won't have a bunch of copies already? Any help appreciated.

My gosh, what a LOVELY thread, Flamingo!! There are so many books to recommend, but may I suggest you go to a book store and pick one out yourself?
edited to add: my favorite children's book is a collection of traditional stories, with great illustrations. Red Riding Hood,
3 Billy Goat's Gruff, etc.
Classic children's books are awesome for this. I'm partial to Margaret Wise Brown ( Goodnight Moon; Runaway Bunny), Robert McCloskey (Make Way for Ducklings; Blueberries for Sal) and Erc Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar; Brown Bear, Brown Bear).. If you remember a childhood favorite that wouldmake it particularly special though.
Make sure you write a note inside the cover, date it, why you are sending this book, your relationship, and anything else you want to say. My mom send my boys books. There was an encyclopedia, a Dr. Suess 'Happy Birthday to You', '101 Dalmations', etc. I still have all those books and her messages to my boys. No, they can't have them yet. My mom's been gone 23 years and it's comforting seeing her handwriting, her love, her notes.
This is a wonderful idea. I've done it myself with the grandkids.
By the way, you could pick out a story that you enjoyed as a child or one that reflects your life, or a message that resonates. I sent a book about 'Thank you and Please' because manners are important.
Susan Boynton, Nancy Tillman are popular authors for toddlers. A Winnie the Pooh book is also a very nice gift. Everyone loves Winnie the Pooh.
I think you might mean Sandra Boynton. If so, I agree. Her books were a favorite with my kids and with me. They used to make them giggle even when they were babies.

My favorites are Hippos Go Berserk and But Not The Hippopotamus. I guess I have a thing for Hippos.
My oldest used to giggle every time we read her Blue Hat, Green Hat.
