I still have my very worn and faded "Little House" hard cover boxed set given to me as a young girl (and my son and daughter both enjoyed them). I treasure them.

More popular authors:

Karen Katz board books
Eric Carle
Laura Numeroff (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie)
Sandra Boynton (previously suggested, but worth mentioning again)
Dr Seuss
Roger Hargreaves (Mr. Men series)
Eileen Christelow (Five Little Monkeys series)
Books of songs by Raffi (Down by the Bay, etc)

If you are concerned about them receiving duplicate books, you could look into books that are local to your region. One relative in Alaska sent us an alphabet board book with Northwest Coast Native Art, and another book called, Wiggle Waggle Woof, a counting book about dog sledding. Both books were unique and a big hit.

I treasure my set as well, they are my very absolute favorites. Between reading them myself (including more than once as an adult) and to both my kids when they were each around 5, I've probably read the series about 7 times.

I got myself the annotated autobiography when it was published a couple of years ago. If you don't have it, I recommend it. It's a nice reference piece.

This just makes me smile- the mom-to-be has loved and collected hippos since she was little (so I'm guessing she'll have those)

Thank you all again - especially the suggestions for "different" books - as I said, I'd like something that would be "unique" as opposed to one that she already has received several copies of. Much appreciated

The books I loved reading to my kids:

Good Dog Carl -Alexandra Day - it's pictures only and so we'd make up a story about the adventures shown in the picture - add their name or change the dog's name

The Snowy Day - Ezra Jack Keats

There's a Nightmare in My Closet - Mercer Mayer... I think this was very popular at one time but when I tried to buy it as a gift recently, I found you can only get it online from Barnes & Noble, they don't carry it in store -- so maybe it's not as trendy now.

Tough Boris - Mem Fox
