For the past few years I've given quarters out instead of candy at Halloween. The kids seem to really like it - the little ones like the shiney stuff and the older ones exclaim "Whoah, Money!"
I don't think it's more expensive when you add it all up. I mean, a big bag of candy can run $7 or more. Plus, for me, it means I don't have candy around the house as a temptation.
Seems to me if more people gave out money instead of candy the better it would be for kids. They could accumulate some dough, and then buy something they like, or put it in their piggy bank, or whatever.
And people could give whatever kind of $ they want. Some people could give pennies - a friend of mine gives each kid 10 shiney new pennies. And there's always going to be the rich show offs who give $ bills.
I don't see the downside.
What do you think, parents? Is money instead of candy a good idea for Halloween?
Love it! Our local dentist offices offer cash for candy too. The candy is donated to troops, and the kids have healthier teeth and some cash for toys. Win win!
My kids probably would have used the money to buy more candy
I guess I just don't see the issue with a once a year holiday where kids get candy. We never restricted how much the kids could eat with their candy because we knew that after the first couple days, they would ration it themselves and more often than not, we ended up tossing the Halloween candy somewhere around Easter. I also know plenty of parents that would limit kids and how much they could eat but those kids were sneaking candy behind their backs or would use allowance money or whatever to buy candy. It just put the kids in the position that they had to lie to their parents and that is way worse then having some candy once in a while.

My mother has been doing that for 30 years.
Great idea!
She does it because she is in a rural area and has NO idea how many kids will show up any given year. She does not want or need excess snacks around the house... so quarters it is!
That is a great idea. Our oldest son is allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts and cannot eat most of the candy given out. So we give the candy to someone else, and we give him money in exchange.
We get such an incredible number of trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood that there's no way I could afford to do it, lol! But I do remember as a kid being pretty excited to get money in my bag ... of course, unless you're 5 or under, 50 cents doesn't buy you much these days. :-/
