MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.

The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

“I feel it is crazy,” said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

If this isn't the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of it comes close. Good grief, now little girls can't even give their buddies a hug? If the teachers and administrators aren't able to tell the difference between a "buddy hug" and sexual behavior then they have not got the discernment needed for their positions.

I think that this is ridiculous at best! The school board needs to be brought to session for sure. That is what little girls do there is nothing meant by the gesture, it is no different than the boys saying to a friend hey thanks man!

Look at the other side....not everyone likes to be on the receiving side of a hug. She may think it's fine, the other girl may not. She's 13. It's time for her to learn that some people aren't touchy-feely. The older she gets, the more she will find that hugs don't make everyone happy. And unfortunatly, hugs are also misinterpreted.

“Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.”

Between teachers and students, yes. Between students (within reason) it should be okay.

Hey, I know: Let's burn some books!
