Boy Scouts would be better with girls - The Washington Post

If allowing boys into a girls organization came up, people would cry foul and say how important it is for girls to have a place to be comfortable without boys. And what is Girl Scouts for?

When I was in Girl Scouts, it was for sneaking into the Boy Scouts camp at night. I guess we were ahead of our time.

I was in Girl Scouts about 20 years ago... and we had 2 boys in our troop. Don't know why...don't even remember if they were brothers of other troop members or what. We never gave it much thought.

I do know that boys ARE allowed to join Girl Scouts...does the Boy Scout organization not allow girls to participate? I would be very surprised if that was the case in this day and age...

Not sure how it all is now, but (back in my scouting days) the Boy Scouts were more out-doorsy, survivalish, camping, hiking, etc... Girl Scouts tended toward crafty, cooking, childcare, etc...

If it is still that way, it might explain why some girls / boys gravitate toward one type of scouting or another.

I don't think boys should be in Girl Scouts either. It is up to the individual troop leaders to make the group. So if a particular troop would rather have more outdoor/camping activities, they should do it. Homogenizing the sexes in every aspect of life is not only unfair but totally counterintuitive.

Hmmm.... in my GS (jr. high/Cadet) troop 35+ years ago, both of our leaders were men. Don't recall any cooking, crafty things or childcare. I do recall canoeing, backpacking and sailing. Perhaps we were ahead of our time....

I was in Pioneer girls when I was young. We did crafts, cool trips like going to a NBA game, helped the poor, talked about life problems and had support for each other, played flag football, volleyball, had movie nights, went to NewYork on a fairyboat ride and such.

Eventually boys joined and called it just The Pioneers. It was fun.

Let me be clear: I don't have a problem with coed groups. But I do think there is a place for single sex groups as well.

If my troop had been like yours I might have lasted longer than a year. I always thought the BS program was a lot more fun than the GS. My brothers were always off on camping trips, our troop went once.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say Boy Scouts would be better with girls, but I never liked the idea of gender-specific activities.

Why not?

Too much pigeon-holing. I know boys who are happier in the kitchen than in the woods, and girls who would rather cook over a campfire than a stove.
