Along with the growing popularity of consuming one’s placenta, new companies have seen the demand and offer services to process a woman’s afterbirth. Many companies will pick up the new mom’s placenta from the hospital, then steam it, dry it and encapsulate it before returning it to the mom in a few days time. Other reports show that some people make a dish that would normally contain meat, like stew or lasagna, then replace the meat with placenta.
My mother did this, and goddamn it, she threw a big party and had her entire family around when they did it as well. My father was mortified. But she went ahead with it anyway, made a roast alongside it and we all tucked in. And she just had to give me a piece! I had to eat it, there and then, and they all took out their cameras and snapped away. It was so humiliating. At every reunion, I have to look into my uncles' eyes, make strained conversation, and watch him look into my eyes and hear him wordlessly say, That's right, boy... I watched you eat a piece of your own mothers' placenta.
I would imagine that ritual placenta eating puts green vegans in an awkward spot. The eco-conscious thing to do would be to eat the placenta, after all nothing has been harmed, and yet it is meaty-ish. Hmmmm......
My hypnobirthing instructor told me I should do this..I thought she was joking at first.
I preferred the idea of planting it next to a new tree, but honestly after 36 hours of labor I have no idea what they did with it, and it was the last thing on my mind.
Haven't noticed any of my younger friends eating their placentas after birth, but umbilical cord blood donation is catching on. The cells can be used for lots of therapeutic purposes.
