We haven't yet, but that's because we don't have the money to do so. We don't have family in town, so it's not as simple as just dropping him off for a fun long weekend or week at grandma and grandpa's house. If we had time and money I'd like to do both. I'd prefer mostly to travel as a family, but a few long weekends here and there where we could -- gasp! -- sleep in late in the morning (or at least have the option!) and be able to go to a bar (a rare event for us) would be nice.
We've taken several 2-3 day vacations without the children. We want to go to Europe someday but we are waiting until the kids are in their teens to take them. Since it's a once in a lifetime thing, we wouldn't want to exclude them from that kind of trip. Weekend trip to Cape May or something? I think they would rather stay with grandma. LOL

We took the kids to Spain last year when they were 17, 15, 12. It was a great age for traveling to Europe. It was quite expensive but like you said it was a once in a lifetime trip for us. My husband and I have been to Europe without the kids once before the kids were born and once on a work trip for him but we really enjoyed taking the kids.

Same here. We're already planning a trip to Germany when they're 18 and 16 so we can all drink beer together.
My son LOVED Italy. He was four. He still talks about it. I still vividly remember visiting various European countries when I was a kid. If you can't afford for all of you to go now then by all means wait, but if your concern is that kids aren't good travelers or won't appreciate a foreign vacation when young (I know many have that fear) then don't worry about it; kids make excellent travelers!. I only wish we could afford to go on more big trips -- there are so many places I'd like to go while my son is still young but, alas, fiscal realities intrude.
No.
Vacation or free time for me means time to spend with my family. They are not a job, a hassle, a pain, or something I need a break from (like my work). They don't annoy me, nag me, or make my life unpleasant in any way. If I were to try to take a trip without them (like I did twice - went somewhere with another friend and left my wife at home - this is before my son was born), I'd just wind up missing them.

Why wait till they are teens?
I have wonderful and vivid memories of Europe and Asia and various parts of the U.S...all before the age of 10.

That's me. Even a couple business trips I had to go on, I could do a little sightseeing after seminars or training but I didn't really enjoy it because it would have been much funner having the kids see things with me.
I figure soon enough they'll be grown up and gone, and why would someone have kids and not want to do all the fun things with them. When they're gone, then I'll have to look around for some kind of vacations but I won't have the same fun as when I could bring them. I can't see why anyone would want to lose any time with their kids.

We took ours to Germany when they were 6 and 4... my older child remembers some of it, but my younger one doesn't. We're planning another trip to Germany and Spain maybe in two years, when they'll be 13 and 11.
