I believe drop sided cribs are no longer made. Don't buy one of those. If you get a tall dresser or book case it should be anchored to the wall. You can buy the anchors in the baby-proofing section at Target or Babies R Us. If you buy used, google safety recalls to make sure it wasn't included in one. Puffy bumpers, blankets, and pillows shouldn't be in an infant's crib.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has info on baby furniture guidelines. The link below is to their section on cribs.

Drop side cribs are banned by the government. There are new regulations about slate strength and hardware strength etc, as of 2011 I believe. If you get a baby bumper (which I do recommend, as my infant had her arms hang outside the slats while sleeping and I worried about her hurting herself) - they make mesh ones. I got a nice one for baby #2 on amazon.

As mentioned, anything tall should be anchored. When I was 5 or so, I used to use the bottom draw of my dresser to reach into the top drawers, and one day I was just too big to do this, and it fell and pinned me against me bed! I was okay, but shaken up over it.

Don't know what other furniture you're looking for. For my baby #2, I got bare minimum... crib, bouncer, pack n play, couple small plastic draws for clothes etc., and a car seat. Obviously, a mattress, a mesh bumper. I have a cushion with covers for changing, which I plan on doing on the floor, or maybe the bed. Considering getting something to put baby in the tub with.

also no stuffed animals in crib with baby. not sure what the current thinking is on mobiles but they are very handy when kid is old enough to focus but get in the way while still a newborn. remember to get lots of sheets, 2nd hand is fine and receiving blankets as babies leak from all orifices a lot and it is horrible to not have spares in the middle of the night. a rocker is essential and a night light for you not really for the kid. remember you will be stumbling around half asleep in the middle of the night. good luck
