Please READ the article before you come here and talk about it When this article talks about other stories (Ie. the App that child molesters used to find victims, as young as 9, and rape them) etc etc.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/26/te...ef=todayspaper

So - Have at it, You know me...the one running around screaming "DO NOT give your kids phones, etc etc"

What's your reaction to this obviously professional written piece and the comments below it.

My reaction is I'm wondering why the mother didn't talk to her daughter about the daughter's video broadcasts. And the article says the daughter never talked about it with her mother. She just "let" mom continue watching. That's just strange to me since my family actually TALKS with each other.

Ms. Ross - the mother - also said she had a tool that disabled the internet at certain times but her children turned the internet back on. Mom ain't the boss in that house. I guess if you're not the boss and you're aren't talking with your kids then you are spending money on gadgets to keep track of what they're doing.

I agree. Symptoms of bigger problems.

I agree completly with the above. If this were me, I would be talking to my daughter and letting her know that posting any type of video of herself is dangerous and not allowed under my roof, period.

It's sad that neither of them are talking to eachother

Some children need phones to call mom and dad to pick them up from places. Also it's good to have if they get lost somewhere. Increasingly there are less and less payphones around to use so mobile phones are becoming a necessity.

I would imagine since the child notices the mother is watching she is less prone to post anything bad.

But smart phones, with cameras, video chat, full web access and texting are NOT and will never be a necessity.

Lots of things in life are not necessities, and yet we have them. And lets also face the reality in that in the next 10-15 years the only phones around will be smart phones. They are here, part of society, and something a parent just has to deal with in regards to kids.
