Just curious. How many texts does your teen use each month? Please be honest. I want to be fair when setting limits for my daughter.
Last month my 12-year-old sent about 1,000 and received 1,200. We have unlimited texting so it doesn't affect our bill. She's not allowed to text in school or during dinner or family get togethers. She has to leave her phone downstairs when she goes to bed at 9 p.m. and she has to leave her phone in the car when we are in church. Also, when she's grounded we take her phone away for a day or longer, depending on the offense.

Reason: Add a line
My last teen doesn't text AT ALL!!We don't want her to be available 24/7 to anyone, and if she wants contact we have a landline. She respects that and has absolutely no problem with it,...she also has a lot of friends.
My daughter has unlimited, that being said, I'm sure she sends and receives at least 5,000 a month, some of those are one letter texts...like "k." lol.
She doesn't really let it be known when she's texting.
She works for me, so she earns the cost of her phone plan and other luxuries.
I've never had a problem with my son texting since we both have unlimited texts on our cell phone plans. That is the one thing that really makes him happy so I don't even stress about it. As long as he stays out of trouble, keeps his grades up and treats his family with respect, then texting isn't even an issue at our house.
But girls are different than boys....so, use your discretion on that one.
I'm with jk and mm... It's not about setting a number (and unlimited is definitely the way to go on your plan) :-)...it's more about setting the boundaries on where and when your child is texting. In our family, it is inappropriate to text during meals, during face-to-face conversations with others and during classes at school. Oh....and for the driving ones....NO texting while driving. LOL
My children know the rules for texting in our home and they are, no phones at the meal table, thats for all meals, my son leaves his phone off and on charge at night in the living room, my daughter doesn't have to but does the same thing, my son is 15 and sends about 1500 a month ( we have unlimited texting ) and receives about 1800 or 1900, my daughter is 23 and send about 2500 and receives about the same each month, me I hate, HATE texting so I only receive them then I'll call you to answer, you question or statement and it better not be something stupid.
