Would you let your 8 years old watch videos on Youtube? We ended up restricting our child's account as some of the videos hat are popular among kids are not age appropriate. The problem is that other families do allow kids watch video on Youtube.

It depends on what it is. My six year old daughter likes to go on and watch "Fred Figgelhorn" videos. But I only allow her to watch maybe one or two tops. You need to do whatever works for YOUR family.

I have to ask - why is that a problem?

My Mom and I let my 3yo niece watch nursery rhyme videos on YouTube. Of course, we're sitting right next to her picking out the videos and making sure that they're 100% appropriate the entire time. And the videos are appropriate, at least with our experience. My mom even saves a list of these videos in her "favorites" so that she can easily go back to those same videos again.

There are too many video mash-ups on YouTube nowadays; you have to be careful about what videos you click on. Just because it says "Barney" in the video title doesn't mean that the contents are necessarily age-appropriate.

There is a site called Kideos that is like a Youtube for kids, mostly animal vids, or babies doing cute things, or clips from kid shows. Seems to be good for 10 and under if you want to check it out.

It depends on the kid. Guide him or her to look for good content. Things that are educational. Make the good stuff attractive to them.

My almost-8 year old does not know how to find Youtube videos, or even what they are. I am no rush to teach him, either. I'm not going to sit next to him and monitor his every youtube click which I think you would have to do. He has educational and age-appropriate sites that we've bookmarked for him instead.

If you want to enjoy the appropriate vids without allowing clicking on junk, you can dl and keep youtube vids using this website.

KeepVid: Download and save any video from Youtube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, iFilm and more!

I have dled many of the educational videos for my two grandchildren including They Might Be Giants stuff (Science is Real, Here comes the ABCs, Here comes the 123s), vids from the Electric Company, etc.
