My DS, 8, has his heart set on a pair of Skechers that light up on the front. They are not too ugly (like most boys' sneakers) except for the lights.

Are those not cool anymore in 2nd grade? Or are they still rockin?

I would pick Nike's but they run so narrow for his foot.

Let him have the Sketchers...he's too young to care whats cool or not. Its not like he's bringing a "blanky" to school.

My son is in third grade and wants them too, but every time we see them they are sold out of his size.

Who cares if it's cool? He doesn't have to only wear what other eight-year-olds consider cool. He could dress to please himself!

With that said, my DD's best friend, 7, just got a pair like that and both DD and the friend think they're the coolest thing ever.

Well, I KNEW you all were gonna say that!

What I am trying to avoid is him wearing them once and coming home saying, "mom, so and so teased me and said they were babyish" and then he doesn't want to wear them anymore even though of course I would make him considering we just spent XX.XX bucks on them....

I completely understand what you are saying and could possibly be faced with the same issue. I will just encourage to dress the way he likes to (as long as its reasonable of course, and I believe lights on shoes are completely reasonable for a 2nd grader!) and not worry about what other people think. Its all a part of learning to be confident and strong...and have a higher rather than lower self esteem...IMO.

Yesterday I blinked and now my baby girl is 17 and is going to college in the fall....I'm trying not to blink too quickly with my son!

Enjoy the sketchers with him - before you know it he'll be wanting the "cool" sneakers any way!

Warning: If he wants the "cool" sneakers now he is going to want the $300.00 "cool" sneakers when he's a teenager.

Get ready to explain chores, bank accounts and "saving up for what you want 'cause momma and daddy aren't shellin' out no 300 bucks for no sneakers when you're 15"!

Unless you're independently wealthy in which case I have a list here...

Hey Dew,
When we were at the store, we sure did set a limit. No $75.00 sneakers for us.

I did have a coupon though.

He wears a uniform, so I guess I can give the kid a break on the shoes.

They sound very cool. Do they come in grown-up sizes for us blissfully childfree folks? I'd love to have a pair.

Here's a clue: If your kid wants them, they're cool! Even if they're not cool to everyone else, they're cool to him. That's all that matters!
