My daughter is only 6 months and she sleeps from 9PM to 7AM and then goes down at 11AM-1PM and again from 4PM-5PM. In between she eats well, is the perfect weight and height for her age, she's already trying to pull herself up on things, she talks to us, plays with her toys and the dogs. The only days she doesn't engage in that sleep schedule is if we're out at her grandparents house on either side. Then she won't take the 11AM-1PM nap, but isn't cranky.

All these children are young and growing. If you're truly concerned ask your doctor. I'm sure they'll say it's fine, though.

It does seem like a lot. Not the nighttime, as much as still feeling tired after a very long nap. It 's worth a mention to his pediatrician.

Yeah that seems like a lot to me too. I'd mention it to your pedi as well. It's not the sleep amount so much, if he's really active he might need the nap - but I'm thinking he shouldn't be complaining about being tired. That seems a bit odd.

Sleep is a funny thing.

My daughter slept all the time when she was little, occasionally 15-16 hours a day. She was often found to be anemic at her health checks, and I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. She did outgrow that by preschool but even today (age 24) she like 9-10 hours of sleep a night or she gets "cranky"

My son never took naps as a baby. Never. I really made me appreciate my daughters sleeping habits. THen in HS he would stay up until 3am reading and get up at 7:30 for school. I'm not saying he did well on that schedule but at that point it was out of my hands. Now he sleeps at least 6 hours a night.

At that age, my older son slept 12 hours at night and then took 2 2-3 hour naps each day. He's also huge so he did a lot of growing

My younger son did 10 hours at night and 1 1.5 hour nap.

Hi all im a first time mum and am abit worried about my 14 month old daughter she sleeps from 9 till 11 everyday and then naps for 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon. She eats everything she is given and is a healthy little girl. She is a small 14 month old but that is the only thing the health nurse says. Is there anything im doing wrong I don't wake unless she wakes me she is my alarm clock

go back and read this entire thread which was started in 2007. Your girl seems to be sleeping just right---for her. My son would cry sometimes during the night at that age but I wouldn't nurse him in the middle of the night much past 12 months. He then would nurse first thing in the morning and go back to bed to sleep for 4 or 5 hours and still take afternoon nap. If she's alert and happy and eating and peeing and pooping while she is awake then she is not sleeping too much. Alot of important growth is taking place at this stage and she needs a lot of sleep.

That's not normal since he's always saying he's tired. Have you talked to the pediatrician? He could have a vitamin deficiency. Iron, B-12, (probably not D since it's in milk). There's a certain type of B-12 deficiency that taking vitamins won't help because the intrinsic factor doesn't work properly to absorb B-12 in the system. There could be some health issues that cause tiredness too. I wouldn't wait for the next well visit. I'd make an appointment with the pediatrician soon.
