Alice, this is my absolute top pet peeve! It's not just the adults. Some folks put their little boys hair in braids- if the boy has a pretty face, who can tell? I hate to think of the trauma caused to these little guys by innocent strangers calling them sweet little girls.
But I really really hate when I can't tell the gender of an adult. Grrrr. This has nothing to do with Transsexuals, etc. for me. These folks tend to be well-groomed and choose a gender that we can see. It's the sexless blobs that bug me.

Reason: To clarify.
I know what you mean. I referred to a friend's kid the other day a "a cute little girl". Well, he wasn't a girl, but he sure looked like one. Not my fault he needs a haircut.
I just saw that yesterday at the library. I don't know if the person was a man or a woman behind the desk.
I don't ask or comment anymore. I remember years ago at our skating rink a girl asked me how she looked. She was a nice enough girl but I don't know what her sexual preferences were and she dressed like a boy. Her choice, so I asked her if she wanted to look like a guy. She said yes and I told her she looked great. She still talked to me after that so I guess my answer was ok.
You think you have a hard time telling the difference between some men & women? Try running Can & Bottle for security at a Depeche Mode concert. You aren't allowed to frisk members of the opposite sex and sometimes you just couldn't tell which was which. Of course, they all tended to wear tight leather clothes and were skinny so they usually couldn't hide too much anyway.
Also, if you watch anime or play Japanese games it is sometimes really hard to tell the difference.
