The first of many posts (I think), the flashback is for those who want to remember what was good about America. Things that changed or defined a generation, or just notable mentions.

First up: Crystal Pepsi. Quite possibly the most notorious item ever sold. For those that don't recognize the name, I'll break it down for you.

Crystal Pepsi was born of an idea. During the early soda wars (Pepsi/Coke, 7Up/Sprite, Barqs/Mug Root Beer, etc), a select few people questioned the health benefits of the darker soda versus Sprite and 7Up, claiming that the latter "appeared" healthier since they were clear. This idea got back to PepsiCo, who decided they would pitch something new: a campaign to emphasize a new type of Pepsi. This version would allegedly have the same taste as regular Pepsi, but be healthier and cleaner. Crystal Pepsi was born in two versions: Regular, and Diet.

Regular launched with a strong following, both positive and negative. It seemed like a three-way split over the taste of the beverage: Those who liked it claimed that it tasted just like regular Pepsi but "fresher". Some consumers actually disliked it because it tasted like regular Pepsi, expecting a different sensation and not being able to justify the price difference. The others felt it tasted "too sweet" compared to regular Pepsi. In truth PepsiCo didn't change the base formula of the drink, but simply removed some of the food coloring, dropped the caffeine and a bit of the carmel to give it a clear appearance. To supplant the drink, PepsiCo signed an agreement with Pizza Hut to co-market the drink with pizza to help keep it on the TV and get folks to try this new concept. The experiment failed and Crystal Pepsi died shortly thereafter.

The going rumor is that it is still sold in some parts of Mexico under a different name - Pepsi Clear.

Did You Know...People are still selling old, "unopened" bottles of Crystal Pepsi on eBay to this day? And getting bids??

I liked regular Pepsi better also. I did have a 6 pack of Crystal Pepsi for a LONG time and finally gave it to a Marketing Professor at a university for a display of great marketing, but a product failure.
