News,

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala - A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed at least two teenagers as it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood. Officials blamed the sinkhole on recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.

The pit emitted foul odors, loud noises and tremors, shaking the surrounding ground. A rush of water could be heard from its depths, and authorities feared it could widen or others could open up.

Pictures of the hole below at the link.

Good heavens! That is a scary-looking sinkhole! I've seen pictures of a few sinkholes, here in Florida, but I don't think they were quite that big. What a shame about those two kids, and apparently their father, as well.

I've never seen anything like that! How very sad for the Guatemalans! They are such a wonderful and nice people. I visited there many years ago and was amazed that even though they had so little material possessions, in relation to Americans, they seemed so happy, content and very very nice. What a tragedy for the families who lost their teenage children.

That is really something, it looks like solid rock, you wonder why the people living right on top of it didn't hear anything before or feel anything. It is mind boggling, I'd be moving far away. Hey, did you see those doors to houses right on the very edge on the cliff to the hole...
