My brothers and I grew up in a house in the Washington D.C. suburban area in what was then a brand new sub-division. We were the original purchasers of the home, and grew up in it in the 1960's, 1970's, and early 1980's. My mother sold the home when she retired in the mid-1990's.
One of my brothers now has cancer, which has recently turned very serious. I would like to take a trip with him to our childhood home. Not just drive by it, but actually stand in the backyard where we used to play, and the family room where we had so many Christmases, etc. I have a lot of photos of from those days, both inside the home, and outside.
I have thought of contacting the current owner's to request if they would mind us stopping by one day to do this. The neighbor we all grew up with still lives next door - I know she would vouch for us that we are good people. I just think it would mean a lot to my brother, and to my other brother and I. The house has gone through several owners since my mother sold it.
Has anyone else done this? Contacted the current owner of their childhood home and asked to see it "one more time"? How did you go about it?
Thank you sincerely for any suggestions.

My sister and I just knocked on the door and said we grew up here. They let us in, but it was sad seeing what they had done to the place. The house was built in 1911 and had lots of beautiful details. They had painted the mahogany wainscoting white! We didn't go upstairs.
In your case I would write a letter explaining the situation and see what happens.
I see what you're saying. Maybe some things are just better left to the pictures and the memories.
