AWESOME...Thanks, Junkman!!! Yep, the Eagle is one incredible fighter! (Tulegirl, This is one time I'm glad the Life Support folks didn't have to show how good they are!)
WOW is right! Great video JunkMan! It was a lot more than the F15 Eagle's durability and Nedivi's piloting skills that enabled him to land the aircraft safely at over 250 knots, let alone fly it for over 10 miles with just one wing. Looking at the video, the rear starboard horizontal stabilzer probably kept the aircraft fairly balanced.
On a side note, the Israeli Air Force have been known to modify the fighters they buy from the United States. They heavily modified the F4 Phantoms, the F14's and possibly the F15's and F16's. They also had the French Mirage in the 1960's, which was also heavily modified to fit their needs.
It reminds me of WW2 footage on aircraft comming back from missions shot up and with pieces missing. Good video. Supposedly this was part of the statement McDonald Douglas made about the incident.
The IAF (Israeli Air Force) contacted McDonnel Douglas and asked for
information about possibility to land an F-15 with one wing . MD replied
that this is aerodynamically impossible, as confirmed by computer
simulations... Then they received the photo....
After two months the same F-15 got a new wing and returned to action.
McDonnel Douglas attributes the saving of this aircraft to the amount of
lift generated by the engine intake/body and "A Hell of a good Pilot"."
