The poor guy was in south Florida right off the entrance ramp with a sign that said Delaware or anywhere.

He looked to be in his 50's and had a suitcase with him.

I hope a trucker or someone helps him.

I would be so sad if I was stranded somewhere with no money or help from family to get anywhere. Sadly, I'm not in a position myself to help him.

that is sad, although sometimes when I see a hitchhiker with a suitcase I can't help but wonder if he has his mom in there

Well, you do take your chances picking up any hitchhiker.
Years ago, some girl I knew, stranded me deep in NJ.
I had no transportation and wasn't even sure where the heck I was.

Some nice guy in a pickup truck took me all the way to the nearest Patco line and I got back to Philly and home from there.

It's a two way street: the hitcher could be a psycho, but so could the "samaritan".
This happened back in the '70's. Not sure they were any safer times than today.

he was probably a billionaire and was going to give a million dollars to anyone who picked him up.

Maybe he was just a guy who needed a ride and was waiting for 'someone else' to come along.

One possibility is that this is a scheme to entice donations from people who wish they could give a ride but cannot.

He might not be going anywhere at all.

There was a time when the American people would stop and pick up such a person. Most of you have never seen those times, and will never know what it was like.

I remember once, in a gas station, giving a couple of bucks to a guy who said he needed gas and had no money. My friend said "You're crazy". I replied, "Yes, but I'll sleep well. If that's how he earns his living, he'll eat well. Everybody wins."
