...To see if there's a correlation between the gender and the side
But you can't get any meaningful gender correlation poll without knowing how the bed is positioned in the room and which side is closest to the door, bathroom, etc., since that's how many (most?) of us choose which side - by its orientation in the room - not just left or right, as noted in wit-nit's post above, as well as the article you quoted.

The right side if I'm lying in bed on my back. It's closest to the door and since I'm the last one in bed in the middle of the night it's just easier. Our dogs will alert us to intruders. They will hear them long before either of us would. Yet another good reason to go to the shelter and save a deserving life.
The whole left and right thing is a little ambiguous. Is it from the bed, looking at the bed from the foot of the bed, lying face down, or on one's back?
I sleep the side that it's least likely I'll bash my head on the ceiling/roof when I get out.

It's not ambiguous. You're just thinking too hard.
When you're on bed. Are you on your left side or your right side. If you were to face the bed, the answer should be the opposite.
