I have 14 guns and I only use them for recreation. You ought to take it up as a hobby, and don't think of the scary stuff the anti-gun crowds would like you to believe. Start out with a .22 LR or .22 magnum pistol (Ruger makes good ones) and shoot paper targets at a local range. I guarantee you, it won't be long before you start thinking about getting bigger guns.

It shouldn't scare you 2Goldens. When you first get the gun, if you know somebody who's good with guns, have him/her take you to a range and shoot your firearm to get a good feel for it, and you'll get comfortable with handling it. If you don't know such a person, many ranges have classes that teach you how to handle firearms, and shoot them safely.
