Is it considered assault if you turn a garden hose on a solicitor who comes to your door? (One of my neighbors claims he has chased them off with a blowtorch in the past, but I would never be that extreme.)

Unless you're defending yourself then it's called assault.

In California at the moment it might be described as a waste of water.

Why be mean to someone just trying to do a job? Just say no thanks and have a nice day. How about offering them a glass of water if it's a hot day?

I usually give the a minute or so to see what they're about, then politely tell them I'm not interested.
If that is too much for you to handle, then get one of those "No Solicitors" signs from the hardware store and put it where it can be seen from the walkway.

Problem solved.

I live at the end of a lane and there is no reason to come down here other than to come to my house.

I have a No Cold Caller notice on the gate and on the door, and have set up the area, in conjunction with the other residents in the area, as a No Cold Calling Zone under County Trading Standards.

Does that stop all cold callers?

I wish it did.

No it's because they got a 'hot deal' knowing you can't refuse...
