I am retired in Rosarito Baja and the US currency is accepted along with the main Mexican currency.

They do NOT accept the penny while other coins are used in transactions or for tips (common practice in Mexico).

Other day at the large Grocery chain was given change of which I just put in my back pocket and later on saw a $1 1979 Indian woman (Saskwatch) (sp) along with two other $1 Copper coins with NO dates on them.

This is the first time I have seen these coins but was surprised that an American could have spent them here. On the other hand maybe was given somewhere as a tip and then used in a purchase.

Checkers have a problem with a need to look at their own currency for any counterfeit bills let alone mess with our odd coins.

Looking at the (3) $1 coins next to a 25 cent piece wonder if a mistake was made during their usage.

The US needs to get rid of them or maybe they already have started too while a few are still coming out in circulation from coin collections etc.

Not a big issue here just thought a break on topics for a 4th of July might bring a laugh or grin to some.

We patriots aren't really looking for a break from the 4th of July. We are celebrating our Independence Day here in the USA. I'd be happy to carry a couple American coins as opposed to the wad it would be in Mexican currency. I would think...

Retail stores here in the good ol' United States have to put up with the various coins and other moola from Mexico that are just as confusing.

We get Canadian coins mixed in with American coins, frequency depending on the relative exchange rate. I have never seen a Mexican coin this far north.

Years ago, I got a handful of change from KFC. It took me a moment to figure out what was wrong. The quarters were actually Susan B. Anthony dollars. I pointed out the mistake to the cashier.

Since it costs more to make pennies and nickels than the face value, I would like to see the US discontinue pennies, nickels, and dimes. We could have quarters, Kennedy half-dollars, and Eisenhower dollar coins. We could also eliminate the 1 dollar bill. We should also bring back at least the 500 dollar bill, if not also the 1000 dollar bill.

The alternative of steady deflation until one ounce of silver is again worth one dollar is unfortunately not feasible. We would be forced to default on our national debt.

Don't they have Pizza Patron's in Mexico. I think they take US currency too.

I'm completely happy with USA currency. People in other third world countries make their on problems and can solve them themselves. The US doesn't need to interfere. As for the 4th of July it is the most important day in American history and let the posts flow.

Who would want to walk around with a $500 or $1000 bill in their pocket?

Anyone else find it a bit irrelevant (as in "what difference is it to you") that a resident of Mexico should be so concerned about US coins.

It means nothing to me what they do in Mexico. They shouldn't care what we do here either. Our Independence day should not be trashed with meaningless posts either.

I think that pennies ought to be discontinued. They are a nuisance.

Speaking of those dollar coins, I once tried to offer one to a woman who was begging in the streets. She gave me a look of disdain and chewed me out for trying to give her "Canadian money!" I couldn't convince her that it really was an American dollar.
