Good morning peevers.

Another week, and things are beginning to warm up over here at last. March was the second coldest on record. The coldest was 1963 when the River Thames, and indeed parts of the sea froze over.

Yesterday I visited my cousin who was taken to a major hospital for surgery. She's on the mend and should be home soon.

I parked up and stayed just over an hour and the parking charge for 1-2 hours was £3.50- around $5.50.

I'm used to paying parking charges but that is really high, especially for people having to make regular visits, often not under the happiest of circumstances.

So my dear peevers, today's peeve centres around these such situations, and I will word it as follows.

The POTD is;

Adding insult to injury.

Jezer, I'm glad your cousin is OK. Those parking charges are outrageous! Here in San Francisco there are parking meters everywhere and the meter maids (and men) are pretty aggressive about handing out those $60 tickets.

I remember one day that a friend of mine and I were shopping at a resale shop, and I was so thrilled about getting a good bargain that I forgot to watch the time. It wasn't such a great bargain any more when we got back to the car and found a ticket on the car because the meter had expired. As if that weren't bad enough, now there's no more free Sunday parking, though the meters are free until 12 noon (a concession to churchgoers). For a while the city was talking about extending meter hours until 9 pm until local merchants made a big stink, and that idea was quickly shelved.

I don't mind paying my fair share, but I hate being gouged!

I hear ya Jeezer. Tonight a group of us had dinner out and when the tab came they automatically added a 20% gratuity fee on it. I paid for our $35.00 dinner that included the gratuity with $50.00 bill and the waiter brings back the change of $15.00 and asks me if I want to leave it for a tip. Talk about gall. And the meal and service was not that great either, we had to wait for nearly 45 minutes between ordering and being served.

Not quite part of the 'Peeve' but in the area...

Over here (Blighty), a service charge is very rarely included in the bill and it's left to your discretion. If the service is good i'll tip them, if it's very good and they added to the pleasure of the meal they'll get a big tip, if the service is poor they get no tip. Generally, as the waiter/waitress wants a tip, the service is at the very least acceptable.

The idea of them getting a tip just for being there is strange to me. I'm aware that the wages aren't that high (although with the minimum wage here they aren't exactly paid peanuts) but if they want to earn more as a gratuity they can put in the effort. Most people leave a tip as the service is mostly good, because they want to get a tip.

(Sorry Jezer if I've taken this away from the 'Peeve').

That's outrageous! Sure doesn't encourage staff to do a good job & actually earn the gratuity.

Excellent peeve, Jezer. Your parking-fee experience is a perfect example.

Over here that would be adding greed to greed considering what doctors and hospitals charge.
