I just came back from a two week road trip and spent six days on the highway; the best part of the trip was getting OFF the interest highway and enjoying some less traveled roads. Slowing down for small towns and seeing some of the interesting things between two points during the day was very rewarding. There are many good spots to stop to enjoy along the older two lane highways we simply are in too much of a hurry getting someplace and fail to see things along the way.
Precisely! I hate the interstates ..they bypass all the wonderful small towns we used to drive through and visit. When I vacation I'm doing it by car. I want to see things. Not flying to one particular spot...it's just not for me.
..... McDonald Observatory - Texas- If you like science and astronomy, you can stargaze to your heart's content atop a 7,000-foot-tall mountain near Fort Davis. The observatory has daytime tours, live solar monitoring events and evening star parties. The nighttime gatherings are held three times a week, and you can use the observatory's telescopes to get a closer look at the stars. You can even arrange to have a moonlit dinner at the observatory and to talk with a professional astronomer.

McDonald Observatory.. I went there one time and I ordered a Big Mac.. and they kicked me out..
Great tip pammy...but I've never visited any of them , but there is so many things to visit for vacation in New England. Marthard's Vinyard, Cape Cod, The Ice Canons in New Hamspshire, Mountain Climbing, this is to name a few. . It's great to be from New England
SAX, I love the road less traveled. The Sunday family drive of my youth. Mom would pack a lunch. Dad would head towards the woods or a mountain. At some point he'd stop (in the middle of the road, no matter, nothing passing) and stare longingly down a side road and say, "You know, I've never been down that road". Off we'd go! Mom would get upset and seem worried. I always knew that we'd be home by bedtime.
I do that now, have been doing that for a number of years. What could go wrong? I have water, snacks, beach towels and a space blanket in my trunk. What could possibly go wrong?
