I know this question comes off as somewhat naive and juvenile, but to be honest I really do question why people indulge in drugs. I am not here to discuss government drug policy, trafficking, or any of the external realities of drug use, but the internal mechanisms within an individual that would cause them to want to put such substances in their body. My contention as a 23 year old is that we've known as a society since I was in diapers the genuine harm drugs cause, yet people still use them. All those billions of dollars in "Awareness" campiagns notwithstanding. My question to you is if you personally engaged in drug use or knew someone who did, why did you/they do it, despite knowing the risks?

Strong Language, but I feel relevant and expresses my views for the most part.

Hey Shizzles, I often wonder the same thing ... I never understood why folks would willingly pick up the drug habit (or cigarette habit for that matter) ... I'm happy to say that I've made it to 38 without ever being tempted to take drugs or smoke a cigarette ...
My theory for the younger generations, they likely adopted the habit out of a sense of peer pressure and trying to fit in with the crowd. Also, some folks use drugs as a means of escaping reality, especially if they have a less than ideal home situation. Combine these reasons with the young adult's false sense of being invincible, immaturity and defiance of authority and they can be susceptible to the temptations of experimenting with drugs.
Here are my thoughts, they are based on me having addicts in my family.
A large percentage of addicts are men, and they come from homes where there is no father figure. Also, someone who has trouble learning or getting an education is more likely to abuse drugs. In addition most, addicts never fully grow up, they grow taller, yet, they do not emotionally mature. When they start using, their emotional maturity stops.
I read somewhere that addiction is 50% due to genetic predisposition and 50% due to poor coping skills. I do not know if that is correct or not.
They can’t deal with reality and are looking for a better moment. Life isn't so good for many people in a number of ways.
