We made it over the hump, kids! Today's Tip is something
we should all know, so scroll on down and read away!

WHERE TO INSTALL A SMOKE DETECTOR

The International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends you check that your home has an adequate number of smoke detectors. There should be smoke detectors on every level of your home (including the basement).

Basement
  • Install a smoke detector at the bottom of the landing, not at the top.
  • Never place a smoke detector near the furnace.
Kitchen
  • Install a smoke detector specifically designed for kitchen use.
Living Room
  • Smoke detectors should be mounted on the ceiling in the middle of the room and at least 4 inches from the corners.
  • If a smoke detector has to be mounted on the wall, install it 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling and as close to the center of the room as possible. Be sure there are no obstacles that could obscure the path of rising smoke (e.g., a picture underneath the smoke detector).
  • Keep smoke detectors away from fireplaces and wood-stoves.
Bathrooms
  • Install smoke detectors 10 feet from bathrooms because excessive steam can set them off.
Bedrooms
  • There should be a smoke detector outside of each bedroom.
  • If the bedroom hallway is longer than 30 feet, there should be a smoke detector at each end.
  • If you sleep with the doors closed, place a smoke detector inside the room as well as outside.
  • Someone who has a hearing disbility should purchase a smoke detector that uses lights or vibrating devices.

Here in California, you need to have them installed requred by the city. The seller needs to install them before closing escrow. And has to be at the correct location for the bedroom. It has to be outside the bedroom door, above the door and between the ceiling.

Singing along with the Platters...

Pam said someday you'll find
All who procrastinate are blind
When your house is on fire
And no smoke detectors you'll realize
When that smoke gets in your eyes...

I had one in the hallway of my house back in CO that went off whenever it wanted to, including in the middle of the night. One smack with a baseball bat took care of that

Great tips, Pammy!

  • Does anyone have a room where the middle is not 4" from a corner?

  • Can I see the hands of everyone with walls in the center of their room?
