How does this work?

A lot of people are doing decade reviews which makes me wonder.

2010 is part of the first decade of the 21st millennium. We start the second decade today.

So its 2001-2010?

I thought it was 2000-2009.

Interesting.

So if I were to make a best of, I would have to include 2010?

The first decade of the first millennium was the years 1-10. The second decade started with the year 11. Technically, a decade starts with a "1" in the numerical designation. In actual practice, most people consider a decade to be, for example, the years 1960-1969 and it is common practice to refer to "the decade of the 60's".

I think you're correct on this being the start of a new decade. I sure don’t want a repeat of the past ten years! Time to look forward to ten better ones.

You are right, of course. I have completed 7 decades of life and am in the middle of the 8th one. When counting decades of life, we start at 0 (birth) and go to 9. When counting decades of the passage of time, if counting from the beginning of the calendar we use, we start at 1 and go to 10 and then start the 2nd decade. If things keep going as they are, we will soon have gone through a decade of war.

I see it differently. Yes, as motormaker said, technically a decade is any 10-year span (e.g., May 12, 1989 through May 11, 1999 or January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004).

However, we generally think of a decade as starting with a zero or a one. To me, a new decade starts with a zero. The first year of your life, you are zero years old. The second year of your life, you've only celebrated your first birthday so far. Similarly, to me, our decades begin with a zero. The 1990s started with 1990, not with 1991. The 2000s stated with 2000, not with 2001. The decade of 2010s started last year, and will span January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2019.
