Well, as an Orlando resident I'm currently using my couch as a bunker, armed and guarded while switching my attention between the windows and Wheel of Fortune.

...Just kidding! I don't believe Orlando has made a "Most Dangerous" list in a while now; even then, most of the crime is contained to the 'hoods... you know, like in most major cities. Where exactly are you staying?

My family and I have never been victims of crime in the nearly two decades we've been here.

Just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Orlando isn't any worse than any other medium-sized city.

They are some dangerous areas of town but unless you looking for trouble in those areas you're not likely to be affected by it. Like any other city, we have our good and bad areas. Use good judgement, be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine.

I'm sure there are a lot more unsafe places in the U.S. Just use commonsense. Avoid the bad neighborhoods.

Is your auntie a generally nervous person? I've visited Orlando and the theme parks dozens of times (serious D'World fanatic) and never felt 'unsafe'.

Take reasonable precautions, like maintaining control of your purse and credit cards, not leaving valuables in plain sight in your car, locking your hotel room whenever you leave even if just going to the vending machines. Don't flash fancy jewelry or wads of cash around. It's a tourist town, not some utopia. If you wouldn't do it in NYC, don't do it here.

Enjoy your trip.

I never really thought about like this before but I'm going to throw out this piece of advice. Orlando, although a family friendly destination, is still a tourist hot spot like any other. Whatever precautions you would take visiting elsewhere apply equally here. If it seems shady by NYC, or LA standards, it's likely shady here, there no reason to believe it would be any different just because we cater to families. If you wouldn't feel safe in the same type of area in Chicago or Honolulu you won't feel safe in that type of area here. If you wouldn't do it Vegas you wouldnt.....scratch that. Just kidding, if not a good idea in Vegas its probably really not a good idea here.
