Wow, so much about to happen downtown.

Orlando Police Department headquarters right near the Amway center is about to be sold to the Magic so they can develop a $100M entertainment complex along the lines of what was done in LA with the Staples Center area or the Charlotte Epicentre.

Orlando Magic may purchase OPD headquarters | www.wftv.com

Then you have land just a block away purchased by the city for a new potencial MLS soccer-specific stadium for Orlando City.

I heard on the radio this morning that the city said it has no official plans for the property yet.

I doubt they would come out and say they bought the land for this stadium that isn't even approved or funded yet. You have to wonder what is going on there with the timing.

I think that location would be awesome for a soccer stadium, Church Street will than become the sports corridor with Amway, the soccer stadium, Citrus Bowl and Tinker Field all lining up on Church. Plus it would be awesome to spur a resurgence on Parramore ave at places that once hosted jazz and blues legends.

As for OPD I kind of wanted them to stay downtown, possibly next to Firestation 1 but after listening to Chief Rooney talk about how it's not logistically the best location because if something happens while the Amway or some other big event is going on downtown it would complicate the response leaving from a downtown station. For safety's sake it's makes better sense to move it a location where the they could get patrolcars and resources dispatched much easier. Plus it would be cool for the Magic to construct a sports/entertainment complex.

Both plans would be great! I think MLS would do well in Orlando. I know a lot of soccer fans there.

It's great for the entire region to have a central core that keeps developing, it gives our community a focal point, a living room if you will. We have many great areas outside the city that are all great and unique in their own ways. Most of our outlying areas don't want to be the meeting/hosting spot for all of central Florida and are more than happy to let downtown shoulder that responsibility, so development in core serves all our interests.

I predict MLS will grow into the 4th largest/popular league in the U.S. within the next decade after NFL, MLB, and NBA. With the large Hispanic presence in Central Florida, and the fact that there are only 20 games a year at home , and capacity for the stadium is around 18,000, the team should be very succesful in terms of attendance. This is a huge opportunity to get a 2nd major league franchise to the city. A downtown location for the stadium is awesome, as there was talk earlier of building the stadium on I-drive.

I wonder if OPD could work alongside the OCSO at JYP and Colonial, or perhaps a head quarters on John Young between Colonial and Silver Star, lots of vacant land and not much traffic, it may deter some Rosemont criminals
