I've seen it mentioned, but what would you be looking to spend yearly on insurance for say a $300,000 house?

Yeah...the insurance really varies based on any number of factors. It depends on where the house is located, how old the roof is, square footage etc. For example, I have a small 2br/1ba house built in 1961 and my homeowners insurance is around $700/year with Nationwide. I wanted State Farm since they have my car insurance but they were too expensive.

1600 sq ft house, $180K = $550/yr. I have Olympus Insurance and that's the reason I changed to them. They saved me about $350/yr with more coverage.

I'm curious. What is your deductible? $250? $1000?

I haven't own a house yet. Just want to see how low I can get for insurance.

It depends on so many factors:

Age of home
Overall construction of home
Hurricane mitigation in the roof
distance to fire department
distance to closest fire hydrant
Distance to coast
Crime rates in neighborhood
your credit score
Previous claims you've had
The deductible you choose

We use Chubb. They are expensive, but we needed some special contents coverage that nobody else writes in the US, so we didn't have a lot of choice. The good part is that they are consistantly rated #1 for paying claims without haggle. They also don't overexpose themselves in any one given area, so they aren't at risk of going under when half the state is flattened by a hurricane like so many did back in 2004.

Keep in mind that with insurance, cheapest often isn't best.
