And by area, I mean a radius of thirty miles or so. If so, can you give me an idea where to look? Are there boarding houses available? Any assistance is appreciated, thanks.

for that amount of money you will be lucky to find a room in a house. Look under "rooms/ shares" on craigslist.

I don't know anywhere that you can rent that cheap. Your best bet is to find someone looking for a roommate.

You can't even get a parking space in a trailer park for that little. Perhaps you could rent a room in a private home, if you are a clean and safe sort of person and can show that you have the income to pay the rent every month.

Portland is not a low cost place to live. In fact, you might not be able to find a rental for $500 a month any place in Oregon.

If you haven't moved already, try the Midwest or Appalachia . I know a landlord in a small town in Texas who is getting $500 a month for her one bedroom apartments, but she is out in the middle of nowhere, not near any big cities.

Even in any Midwest city, that would be tough to swing. I rented a 2 bed, 1 bath apartment in Columbus, OH for $430 a couple years ago, but that's only because I was renting with a couple that shared a room and were willing to split everything 3 ways. We were all grad students so we were fine with living that way. If OP can find a similar arrangement, they may be able to do $600 - $700, but the rental market here is super competitive.

You might get close if you look around and outside of Oregon City. There are some old buildings that have apartments up stairs or down in basements, that are not your typical apartment complex. A quick google search found studio apartments starting at $557 in Oregon City.

Check with senior services. / senior activity centers / churches

(room rental in home of a senior citizen)
these will be offered by referral, not advertised

Depends on your needs, but a $500 rental independent apt on the open market in Portland will probably be a 'leader' for an up-sale / or not desired accommodation / area..

There are a lot of nice semi rural areas within 30 min of Portland.

Transportation will be needed. (no public transit)

OP, you sound like you may be on a limited income. Perhaps low income apartments? Are you a senior?

I suspect the only way you might find lodging in the Portland area for $500/mo. is as a roommate situation. Either renting a room in an existing house or finding an apartment with roommates.

There are lots of people in the greater Portland area looking to rent out spare bedrooms and such for some extra cash. That is probably where you need to look.
