I've recently taken up crochet and I'd like to be able to select yarn in person. We have a few small yarn stores here (plus the usual Michael's and Joanne's, neither of which have much of a selection). Where in Oregon is the largest - or the best - yarn store. I travel around our state on a pretty regular basis, so nothing is too far, lol. When I lived in Portland, I never really paid attention (plus it has been 10 years + since I lived there and a lot of yarn stores seem to pop-up and then close).

If you travel around Oregon a lot, stop in Terrebonne at the alpaca farm. They have a little gift shop there that sells some really luscious alpaca fiber yarn. Prices for the yarn seem pretty reasonable, considering it is alpaca.

I googled yarn in oregon and got these, which all seem to be in Northern O, but look promising as these #'s only list yarn, plus related supplies and equipment, no arts and crafts, hobbies etc.:

#s - 3-4-5-7-8-9-10-14-15-18-19-20-28

Click on their website link on the right.

Like I said, yarns stores pop up and then close - two of the stores listed in the YP search are closed now and two of them have gone to web-only sales, which is why I was looking for someone with recent info.

We used to have a HUGE yarn store in Medford called Middleford Yarn, but it sold to new owners, halved in size, sold again, moved then closed.

I'll be in Eugene over the Labor Day weekend and probably stop by:
The Knit Shop
Soft Horizons
Cozy

According to Yelp (yea, yeah, I know, but it is better than nothing), the top knitting stores in the PDX area are:

Twisted (NE)
Starlight Knitting Society (SE)
Knit Purl (Downtown)
Dublin Bay (Pearl)
Pearl Fibre Arts (Pearl)
Knitting Bee (SW)
Nitro Knitters (Beaverton)
Blizzard Yarn (Vancouver)

PNW, I'm not a knitter, but Nitro Knitters is down the street from me and I think they have been open for as long as I've lived here (going on 9 years). So they seem to be here to stay, which I think is a good sign.

I asked a friend that knits here in Salem and she said Tangled Purls is the place to go (locally). Not the biggest, but they have good yarn apparently.
