I'm in Crescent City, CA, but I bought my truck from a couple in Central Point, Or, which is north of Medford, but not as far as Grants Pass. I drove the truck around that area to test drive it, and it looked like a really nice area, as did their home, which was in a really attractive subdivision.

Don't know any details, but you might check it out. Looked like a nice smaller rural town, and the commute wouldn't be bad.

Grants Pass seems to be on the up and up, but it still remains a financially stressed town. There are quality people that live there, but the majority seem to be struggling financially. For such a small town they have a large portion of homeless / mentally ill folks on the streets.

I don't think there is much to do there as young person...

Personally, I would be concerned about kids getting into drugs there, so as a parent I think you would want to keep them in sports or other extra curricular activities (4-H, FFA, etc.). Have you considered the outskirts of Talent, Phoenix, Central Point or Jacksonville?

Grants Pass (30K) isn't that much smaller than Medford (80K).

The difference between the two towns isn't that much. I would just live in Medford. or like others have suggested, Central Point or Phoenix /Talent.
