Can anyone tell me all of the reasons they would rather live in Toledo, Oregon versus living in Newport, Oregon or vice versa? I already know this much: Toledo has less expensive housing, more stable community (less tourism), is sunnier and is less windy. Anything else? If you live in Toledo do you end up in your car all the time heading to Newport for most of the amenities? Thanks!!

People live in Toledo because they work at the mill.

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'amenities.' Toledo has one supermarket, a smaller 'Food Mart' as well as a 'general goods' + liquor store, a couple hardware stores, a smattering of bars and restaurants on Main Street, an auto parts store, a Dairy Queen, a swimming pool and library, some art galleries and antique stores, a couple lawyers and banks and realtors and so on, and that's about it. There is nothing like a Wal-Mart or other full-sized retail center in Toledo. There is no hospital. There is an airstrip, if you have your own plane.

The highschool has undergone severe contraction in the past few years, so if you have kids, keep that in mind. If you have kids and send them to Newport instead through a variance, that won't go over so great with the locals. You'd be seen as a standoffish snob.

But it depends on what you like. You do get more land and house for your money.

The reason people live in Toledo is because they work at the mill, like me or they just like the weather and being able to drive for ten minutes and be at the beach. They get good weather and everything they need is ten minutes away, walmart, the beach, hunting (ten minutes east), car dealers, and the schools in Toledo are the same schools that are in Newport just not as many of them.

Smile "Considering A Move From Wisconsin"

I am contemplating... a potential move to Oregon. I fell in love with many..pictures of the natural beauty. My brother use to live in Seattle and loved it. I heard there are more jobs in Washington? I need to be more informed. I love the farmland beauty and living in Wisconsin. The roads are absolutely.. a dream to drive on.. no traffic. Love that! The winters are way.. too long.. and brutal. We are not required to have car insurance.. and that is a big savings at this time.. however.. there are few car accidents here.. due to the non congestion of the roads.. There is so.. much space in between vehicles its like having a road to yourself. There are too many mom and pop business's here. Therefore.. no jobs. I don't mind cool weather and some.. snow.. but this is rediculous. I am by career an Esthetician who has a lisence and works in a Day Spa. I can also with my license go into business for myself.. once I obtain the clients.. which is not difficult to do. I was wondering what areas would have the most Day Spas and/or Resorts that have them employed. I checked and found only a few jobs. I would like to be by the coast.. yet nearest to work. I want to eventually buy land to build a home on..but for when I move.. I will be looking to rent a 2 bedroom home with a yard.. any suggestions? Is there a Weagmans out there? I like a small town feel to a city with a lot goign on to do.. farmers markets.. quaint shops.. large super market.. and gourmet shops.. wholesale markets.. good will stores.. wall mart.. etc. Right now.. where I live its called a City. Its a Norweign City.. they cellebrate their heritage day.. with a fair.. and then a big carnival with a lot of farm animals .. they have car shows.. and craft fairs often.. a parade. They have art galleries to buy and take classes.. a chef store that holds cooking classes.. a art gallery that has knitting classes. So.. as you can see.. I am use to a lot going on.. and want the same town feel..Thank You....HUGS
