We are looking into a move from Phoenix to somewhere greener and with more moderate temperatures. It looks like Medford is near mountains and lots of greenery, but is just too far from Portland (major airport) for me as I will be commuting and need to be closer to larger medical facilities. Any suggestions?

Ummm...Portland or maybe Eugene. Eugene has a hospital and an airport, but not a lot of direct flights. Portland keeps adding more direct flights every month it seems.

If you don't want to be in the middle of urban Portland, you could look at Sandy or Troutdale. Troutdale is about 15 minutes from the airport and an hour to Mt. Hood and Sandy is about 30 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from Mt. Hood.

The climate changes quite a bit as you go north of Medford. Greener, wetter. But if that doesn't matter, and you'd like to be somewhat close to PDX, McMinnville or Newberg might be good choices. Still small town feel, but slowly being swallowed up (or as much as the urban growth boundary will allow) by Portland. Longview/Kelso, WA isn't bad either, and there is always Astoria if you don't mind the almost constant fog and drizzle.

We moved to the Medford area from Chandler, Arizona about 10 years ago. And 2 years later, we moved closer to Portland. I've only lived on the outskirts of southeast Portland, but can tell you that there are a number of towns in this area that offer a small town feel but are still close enough to the major freeways to travel into Portland or Salem. I can't speak to the west side as I'm just not familiar with that area.
