From Irvine to Carson for work.

Is it better staying off the 405 and going a little out of the way
and going 5N to the 91W?? Or it doesnt matter?

Checkout google traffic or sigalert during your commute hours and you'l get a better idea. I would prefer 5 to the 91

Try various routes in mapquest. Looks to me like the 5/22 or 5/91 routes are much farther. And there will be a lot of traffic on the 22 and the 91 during rush hour (which is just about all day).

Default are you crazy??

The 91 Is Just As Bad As The 405 So That Would Be A Waste Of Mileage And Gas Going Down The 91. The 22 Is Parallel To The 405 Nd Becomes The 405 So Basically Just Test Out The 22 To See If It Saves You Any Time
