Hi,
I am looking to move from my childhood home in MV/RSM area to a 2x2 apartment in the Lake Forest/Laguna Hills/Mission Viejo area. I want to be no more than 10 minutes from the 5 freeway, but am concerned about safety. I've been looking for places that have rents under $1700/month for a 2 bedroom but also want someplace safe.

A few of the places I've been considering are Siena Terrace in Lake Forest, Prado in Laguna Hills, and Crestridge also in Lake Forest. I realize apartments aren't the safest place in the world but I just graduated from college and entry-level jobs don't pay much, especially when you're trying to live in OC.

Any suggestions as to safe apartment buildings? It would myself and another woman living there with our Pomeranian dog.

I think you'll be okay. It's Lake Forest, not Santa Ana That said, bad things can happen anywhere whether you pay $1700 in rent or $2900. My friend and her husband were renting at a really upscale place in Irvine and had a drug dealer next door, so yea. I would google map apartments and then in another window google the ones near the 5. Make sure you read reviews on apartment rating sites and also yelp, some are just spiteful ex-tenants but the majority are helpful as far as getting an accurate picture of the types of neighbors who live there. Also make a note of local colleges like Saddleback, cause apts near those will have more students and likely more noise etc along with them (unless you're looking for that, in which case disregard haha). Personally I would rather be in MV than Lake Forest, but that's a personal preference.. and it kind of depends on where in Lake Forest cause some areas are newer looking than others. I would still say the majority are pretty safe though. Aliso has some pretty nice places as far as apts, if you're open to that area too.
