I am hearing more and more that these areas are fairly religious. A 'Christian area' is how another person put it.

Is this true? I was thinking of moving there and I am not remotely religious. Will my kids have trouble at the public schools for not being affiliated with a church?

Default hi

No, it is not a christian area. There is a christian school there, maybe that is why they made that comment.

We live in Ladera Ranch and while not religious, I will say it definitely freaked us out a bit after moving here and seeing the number of church signs on Sunday directing you to different community churches. After living there now for 7 years, don't really notice them anymore although I'm sure they are still there. We are now friends with plenty of our neighbors and while some of them are regular church goers, others are not. Likely Ladera is more "Christian," because there are so many families in Ladera..If you are not into church, it's definitely not frowned upon in Ladera.

This is America, the land of the free (so far). I don't see why your kids would be bothered attending public school in South Orange County if you aren't affiliated with any kind of church.

there are quite a few evangelical types in south OC, but it's not the bible belt by any means.

In a word... no.

This post brought to you by an atheist who grew up and raised 4 kids in South OC.

I am glad this topic was raised. My partner and I are relocating to southern OC in a couple of weeks, and our first choice for a permanent residence is RSM. But I had noticed a rather strong presence of churches and religious schools in the area.

We're not only atheists, but I am an active member of groups devoted to atheism, skepticism, and humanism. So I have been a bit wary of what the environment might be in the area. It is known for being quite conservative after all.

However, I'm encouraged by some of the posts here. Thanks.

My partner and I lived in central OC for 10 years and found it to be rather isolating for us, as a gay couple. There were very few other gay couples around and neighbors never acknowledged us as a couple. Our condo board president was off the charts nutty Christian (wore the beard without a moustache and his wife looked like she just walked off the set of Little House on the Prairie) and he would make little comments to make sure I understood that he disapproved of us being there. This is just one person's experience, but living in a liberal city with a large gay population has been very refreshing after a decade "behind the Orange Curtain".
