Okay, I was thinking about doing this a long time ago... and now that gas prices are squeezing everyone's budget more than ever... there seems like no better time to do it than now.

Share your ideas/experiences for free (or nearly so) entertainment in the metro...

I'll start with a few of my favorites (in no particular order)...

1. Offutt Air Force Base open house (this year Aug 16-17 and featuring the Thunderbirds).

4. Visit Heartland of America Park/Gene Leahy Mall/Lewis & Clark Landing in downtown any day of the year

5. Bird banding at Schramm Park, first Saturday of every month, 9 miles south of Gretna

6. Cathedral Flower Festival, St Cecelia's Cathedral (incredible architecture if you haven't been there before), 2009 date not announced, usually in January

8. My favorite, because I'm a participant... stargazing at the Mahoney State Park golf driving range on Friday nights: July 11, August 8, September 19

9. Holiday Lights Festival, 1 million holiday lights in Gene Leahy Mall and other parts of downtown,

10. Lighter than Air Balloon Fair, Iowa Western Community College, sometime in August, I assume one is planned this year (hope so, it's a great event!)

11. Historic re-enactments at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, August 2nd/3rd, September 6th/7th, October 4th/5th, this is great stuff, cannon/muskette firings, blacksmith working, butter churning, very cool

12. Joslyn has free admission from 10am-noon on Saturdays

13. Hot Shops Art Center
Walk in, watch artists use forges, welders and kilns to fabricate their art, Saturday and Sunday, Noon-4pm, visit website for special events

14. Downtown Council Bluffs/Bayliss Park, have you ever visited downtown Council Bluffs? very beautiful old architecture, many Omahans have never seen the REAL Council Bluffs beyond Broadway Street.

15. Lewis and Clark Monument north of Council Bluffs, incredible views of Omaha, Missouri River valley, airport, surrounding bluffs.

16. Union Pacific Railroad Museum, Council Bluffs, many interesting exhibits for the railroad buff, and again, free of charge.

17. Lake Manawa, Council Bluffs, swim off a sandy beach for nominal fee

20. Mormon Trail Center, always free, lots of early Omaha history, 3215 State St in Florence area, Daily, 9am-9pm

21. Boys Town hall of history and visitors center

26. Omaha Park departments, 'Sun Dawgs' program (for your kids) at numerous city parks... these are GREAT fun for the kids, mine can vouch for that, they even take them on field trips bowling, skating, Royals games... much more.

27. Take a trip to one of Omaha's 11 public library branches

31. Nebraska Region Sports Car Club of American autocross events

Friday night and Sunday night free outdoor concerts in Papillion. The amphitheatre also has free movie nights.
